Finally… a sexist philosopher loses tenure for being a pig.
What’s remarkable about this is that the allegations are RELATIVELY mild.. in that he sent smutty texts and e-mails to his female research assistant — and many, many women report much worse behavior that isn’t punished like this..
80% of tenured philosophy professors are male, while 60% overall are male.
Women have been complaining about disgusting sexist behavior for decades, but I’m pretty sure this is the first time the allegations have been taken seriously.. The result is that women either don’t do philosophy grad school, or if they do – -they’re unlikely to finish their Ph.D. I have my own tales of sexism etc… the one I usually share happened the week BEFORE I started grad classes… my grad advisor asked me questions like “does your husband know you’re in grad school?” and “does he realize you won’t be home to cook him dinner”? Wow… that was at our first and last appointment… ever. He was technically my advisor for many years.
I often have daydreams about him asking those questions now — I’d love to be able to say that my partner cooks for us, so he’s likely to have dinner ready for me when I get home…
Also — for the record, I finished the danged thing without his help… June 10, 2010 I became “Dr. Patty”… YEA!
