More guns in homes..

I’m really mixed about guns — The problem is that I don’t have a magic wand to make them go away.  Given that, I’m not sure what should be done.

This article is about a program in Houston that puts guns in the hands of people in high-crime neighborhoods.  What’s good about the program is that they seem more than willing, and quite capable, of training the people they give guns to.

I think many of the gun tragedies we’ve had in this country could have been prevented if the gun owners had been responsible.. little kids getting their hands on guns is NEVER an ok thing to do.  We don’t let them run with scissors, we don’t give them a fork and show them how neatly it fits in an outlet, we don’t give them the keys to the car — but, “we” will leave a gun lying around where they can get it and pull the trigger.  Some monumentally stupid parents (I don’t use that term lightly) will give a gun to a 5 year-old as a birthday gift!!  WTF, folks…

Really, I’m not kidding about that — go look it up, it makes me ill to do so.

People are more than willing to ignore the plethora of studies concluding that having a gun in your home means that it’s quite likely that gun will be used to harm someone you care about — not the bad guys out to gettcha..

On the other hand, responsible gun owners probably should be able to own one if they have a use for it.  Sure, they should have to pass background checks and all that — but most folks CAN pass a background check.  There are a variety of reasons for the 2nd amendment — whether I think it should have been included in the Constitution in the first place is another story, it’s there.

It really seems to me as if the only way to reduce gun accidents is for the people who are gun enthusiasts to step-up and INSIST on a change in gun culture.  Shame/shun people who don’t practice safe gun practices.  React in complete outrage when someone suggests giving a gun to a minor.  Make it clear that if you share a home with someone who has a mental illness, you are morally culpable if that person takes your gun and hurts innocents — which may even mean that the families of people with mental illness should give up their guns.

Of course, all of this won’t happen — the NRA seems hell-bent on pretending that people with guns hurt other people.  That would hurt sales, I suppose…
