I suppose it’s no surprise that big corporations are predatory — but this is just plain wrong..
It seems that it’s not uncommon for oil companies in Amish territory to lowball offers to farmers in order to lease the right to drill for oil under their land. They do this because they know that Amish folks are very unlikely to sue when they find out that their neighbors made a lot more money per acre.
Yes, the Amish folks could do more research into how much others are paid — before they sign the contract. BUT, when the oil company starts their negotiations, they do so with the knowledge that IF they get the lowball contract signed, it’s unlikely to cost them more in lawsuit costs later on.
