Until this bill was passed, phone calls from prison could be very expensive — and they are always collect — SO, the families of the prisoners paid the bill — often $17 for a 15 minute phone call.
There is a lot of research that shows the children of people in prison often suffer the most. They’re more likely to drop out of school, become involved in trouble and generally go down a path toward a difficult life. Phone calls from their parent in prison can make a huge difference. This is a good thing!
